A request letter is a courteous and tactful letter that requests an imposition on another's time and/or resources or talents. It should put the reader at ease and help him or her feel that responding will not be burdensome. The request letter format should be brief, confident and persuasive as well as assertive without being overbearing. The letter should never apologize for the request, but strive to make the person feel complimented by being asked. The letter should also make it easy for the person to respond and what can be done to accommodate the request. Request letters can be written for donation, information jobs/employment or request a letter of recommendation.
